Discussion about Black Lizard - Black Lizard
Ygglune
Once upon a time Jesus and Mary Chain began exploring a droning hypnotic atmosphere that was laced with confusion, distortion and reverb, all designed to speak to a their unkempt edge of danger vision for the future ... a future for which they saw their generation’s days both numbered and marked, creating an environment of existential angst. Though, anyone who’s seen these 80’s prophets of black leather doom, know that Jesus and Mary Chain were far from their hype, with lives and shows actually filled with distain, in-fighting, and boredom. But that sound, a sound as sonically fueled and original as Nirvana’s, certainly spoke to quite a few people, people who picked up the ideals of fuzz and distortion as a means to create their own vision of sonic expression. Here, on their self titled album, Black Lizard, with the guidance and help of Anton Newcombe [from The Brian Jonestown Massacre], aren’t so much trying to reinvent the wheel, but are seeking out the perfect cords and sustained feedback for expressing their sinuously, slightly damaged pop songs ... songs that are filled with visionary splendor, nostalgia, and more psychedelic hooks than one could hope for. Having said that, there seems to be a sense of flawless calculation and mathematics to their sound that is brought to light [or darkness] with their stylish love for the electronic pedaled effects, and jangling guitars ... one where the casualness of their demeanor, stands in stark juxtaposition to their sound. So, when you pull into the parking lot of some off the main highway diner, and see a vintage Galaxie 500, hood up, and the radiator steaming in front of the single gas pump, you can be sure that inside that weathered cafe, there’s a group of guys endlessly feeding the jukebox with mile wide smiles on their faces, and not a care in the world, because it’s all about material for the next song.Review by Jenell Kesler
