Discussion about Force Mass Motion - Motions Beyond
JoJolar
Michael Wells of Force Mass Motion was one of relatively few veterans of the breakbeat hardcore scene who opted against moving into drum 'n bass or happy hardcore. Instead, his riff-tastic style washed up on the shores of the mid-90s trance scene (although at the time he was probably equally likely to be labelled "hard bag", "NRG" or some other daft half-forgotten tag) . While the Force Mass Motion moniker was ultimately responsible a few well-regarded cuts in the style, Motions Beyond has dated very badly and doesn't really have the craftsmanship to overcome its oh-so-1996 silliness. It's mainly noteworthy for some amusingly cheeky sampling, as Wells raided the biggest epic/progressive house hits of the year and boshed them up with diva wails and pumping acid. So we have Blue Amazon's The Blessing raided on The Pressor and percussion from Tilt's original dub of I Dream cropping up in Everybody (Let's Go), interspersed with trace elements of The Prodigy's Poison on Locked for a little hardcore throwback.Things really become eerily familiar for epic house transpotters on the last two tracks as Wells embarks on whole-sale pillaging of BT, then riding high on the back of his Ima album. On penultimate track Escape, Wells somehow finds out the origin of the dolphin calls on Embracing The Future, and proceeds to nick said warbles wholesale. Then on closer, Fantasy, he has a game attempt at a Divinity style wig-out, with second hand synth stab courtesy of Heart Of Imagination. Fans of Ima might struggle to suppress a guffaw as the climactic pianos begin to ascend dramatically before Wells chickens out of trying to match BT's epic ivory-tinkling and brings the riff abruptly back to earth. All told it's the kind of album where you derive more amusement from spotting the lazy plagiarism than the tunes themselves, although I can report that follow-up LP At Excess does remain quite listenable even to this day, spiced up with some downtempo and drum 'n bass cuts to go with the sweaty gurn sessions.
